Tinkoff Mobile becomes first operator to launch eSIM remote subscription across 63 regions in Russia

Moscow, Russia — 19 March 2020.
Tinkoff Mobile has become the first Russian mobile operator to pilot remote subscription to eSIM virtual modules across its footprint.

Tinkoff customers will be able to activate eSIM remotely in a few clicks on their smartphones and get instant access to Tinkoff Mobile services in all 63 regions of operation without visiting a point of sale.

The service will be available to customers that already use bank products within the Tinkoff ecosystem. They will get a subscription, one week of calls and internet connection free of charge.

eSIM subscriptions will soon be enabled for Tinkoff customers. Applications can be submitted through personal accounts at Tinkoff.ru. To activate an eSIM, potential customers who do not use other Tinkoff ecosystem services can apply for any Tinkoff bank card, which will be delivered the following day by a courier. Once the card is activated, the user will be able to get a remote eSIM subscription.

eSIM can be activated and set up in Tinkoff Mobile app (updated to the latest version) using a QR code or manually. eSIM activation via the Android app is automatic, with no extra steps required.

It only takes a couple of minutes to set up an eSIM. Subscribers can access mobile services immediately after activation.

George Chesakov, CEO of Tinkoff Mobile, said:

«eSIM is the next phase of mobile services evolution. We are convinced that this is a future technology, and have obtained all necessary approvals to become the first Russian company to pilot eSIM remote subscription across 63 of the country’s regions.

«eSIM is a convenient, cutting-edge and safe solution, which is very important during the current coronavirus outbreak. Our customers can simply activate it on their smartphones and enjoy mobile connection with no need to visit our offices or telecom stores.

«Moreover, it is safe in terms of data protection: if your mobile phone is stolen you can block it remotely and fraudsters will not be able to connect your eSIM to another device and get access to your mobile bank and finance.

«eSIM with remote subscription is a perfect way for new users to seamlessly test Tinkoff Mobile’s services and connection. To try it, you do not have to go anywhere — simply make a few clicks on your smartphone.

«You can also transfer your existing mobile number to eSIM and use eSIM and your old SIM simultaneously on one phone while the porting is in progress.

«eSIM is already available to 11 million customers using bank and other products within our ecosystem. Those who have not used our services before can apply for any Tinkoff card and have it delivered the next day by the bank’s courier — together with an opportunity to activate eSIM.»

eSIM is currently available on smartphones and tabs released in 2018 and later. See the full list of devices featuring eSIM at Help. Tinkoff.

What is an eSIM?

In contrast to traditional SIMs, eSIM is a virtual module that is not pre-programmed to access a specific provider’s network. eSIM and a traditional SIM can be used simultaneously: both modules will receive calls and messages.

eSIM also allows users to get a new mobile number to use multiple SIMs on your smartphone and quickly switch between them, as eSIM is very easy to manage. Subscribers can set or change any tariff or service package for their eSIM in a few clicks via the Tinkoff Mobile app.
