Authorities Have Declared a Cholera Outbreak In Cabo Delgado, With At Least 20 Deaths Reported
Last week Thursday, 20 February, the Ministry of Health declared a cholera outbreak in Cabo Delgado. The outbreak has been noted in the Macomia, Mocímboa da Praia and Ibo Districts where over 270 cases have been confirmed. According to the provincial director of health, the outbreak originated on the islands just off the coast of Cabo Delgado where people have taken refuge from the current insurgency in the region. People have reportedly been living in unsanitary conditions on the islands; the conditions have been worsened by the heavy rainfall this rainy season.
The situation is reportedly critical on the Matemo and Congo Islands, as well as the Ibo and Mocímboa da Praia Districts. Treatment centres have been established in the affected districts, where a number of patients are undergoing medical care.
